Concepta Ingredients expands its range of biodiversity ingredients with the launch of Patauá Oil

The new product directly contributes to the local socioeconomic development that currently encompasses 36 families, a community, 23 hectares of conserved and certified organic area.

March, 2021 - Concepta Ingredients, one of the Sabará Group's business units, has a range of more than 100 ingredients for the food, beverage, animal nutrition, veterinary pharmaceutical, aroma and chemical and nutraceutical industries markets.

Aiming to expand its range of products and thus also expand its performance in promoting local socioeconomic development, environmental protection and fair trade, the company presents its new product from the Arboreto Premium Ingredients range - exclusively focused on ingredients from Brazilian biodiversity - the Patauá oil, developed to meet different market segments.

Known as the “Amazon Olive Oil”, Patauá Oil is rich in omega 9 and phytosterols with the natural presence of several vitamins. The oil is extracted by cold pressing, giving flavor and healthiness to the final product.

Coming from the Amazon biome, the oenocarpus bataua is popularly known as patauá, a palm that occurs throughout the region, whose leaves, fruits, strain and roots are also used. Its fruits are oblong, on average 2 cm in diameter and weigh from 10 to 15 grams. Each palm tree produces between 3 and 4 bunches and the fruits have approximately 40% pulp. From the pulp of Patauá is extracted the oil that has a fatty chain and a flavor similar to that of olive oil, hence the nickname “Azeite da Amazônia”.

Also known by the names of Patoá, Batauá or Putauá – it has one of the most valuable proteins found among plants, which can be compared with meat or cattle milk due to the high amount of tryptophan and lysine.

It has several types of application in food as it is highly unsaturated, such as: baked, grilled, fish, vegetables and sweets.

Concepta's biggest job today is to prioritize the use of domestic raw materials, which accounted for more than 90% of the total inputs purchased in the last three years. This is one of the ways they found to value biodiversity and boost the Brazilian value chain.

The Organic and Exotic Oil range is developed from a commitment to social and environmental responsibility, therefore, its products are the result of multiple projects, which have the preservation of the forest as a basis and contribute directly to the development of communities.

The remnant population of the great migratory wave of Northeastern people who, in the late nineteenth century, went to the region attracted by the rubber cycle, is today found in the Marajó Archipelago and lives predominantly from the cutting of wood, extraction of palm heart and cultivation of açaí. “But there are families who live farther away, in holes and streams, and who are unable to monetize the relationship between buying and selling natural products. Therefore, this vulnerability encourages exploitation of labor”, explains Lilia Kawazoe, commercial manager of Concepta Ingredients.

Today, there is an association to enable access for riverside dwellers to improve management with 36 registered collectors. In addition, Patauá Oil is used as a product diversification, making it possible to obtain income in complementary periods and respecting the different harvest seasons. Therefore, with regard to the manufacture of Patauá Oil, currently 36 families, one community and 23 hectares of conserved and certified organic area are positively impacted.
