Babaçu is the fruit of a robust palm tree (up to 20 meters tall), which can have up to 6 bunches per plant, each containing 240 to 720 fruits. Flowering takes place during the rainy season.
Almonds are obtained by breaking babaçu nuts - this process is traditionally done by "babaçu breakers", groups of women from traditionally extractive communities, who have developed a specific breaking technique, transforming the activity into their main source of income.
One of the most important initiatives of this group was the so-called “Free Babaçu” bill. Currently, in Maranhão, this bill guarantees the protection of babaçu trees as a source of income for rural workers, ensuring their exploitation on public and vacant lands and protecting them from explorations.
Babaçu’s main parts are the almonds, from which oil is extracted, and the mesocarp, from which Babaçu flour is extracted.
