Grupo Sabará Announces Partnership with the Origens Brasil® Initiative
This initiative will enable the measurement of information regarding where, how, and who benefited from the purchase of natural raw materials
São Paulo, October 2018 – To certify the transparency and traceability of its production chain, Grupo Sabará, a benchmark in the development of technologies, solutions, and raw materials for the nutrition, health, beauty, and bioenergy industries, joins the Origens Brasil® initiative.
The partnership aims to provide information about where, how, and who benefited from the purchase of natural raw materials in the Amazonian regions of Xingu, Calha Norte, and Rio Negro by two business units of Grupo Sabará: Beraca, a leader in supplying natural and organic ingredients for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and personal care industries, and Concepta Ingredients, specialized in natural and technological solutions for the food, beverage, animal nutrition, and veterinary pharmaceutical industries.
Currently, the territories recognized by Origens Brasil® total more than 90 million hectares – 21% of the Amazon. Additionally, the initiative includes 36 registered protected areas, corresponding to 28 million hectares, 1,279 registered producers, 9,378 potential beneficiaries, ensuring a financial movement of approximately R$ 2 million in 2017.
“We are committed to social and economic development and environmental preservation. To this end, we work to establish partnerships capable of demonstrating the importance of our efforts toward transparency at all stages of the production process,” highlights Ulisses Sabará, president of Grupo Sabará. The executive also emphasizes that the initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which govern all actions promoted by the company.
“In 2016, I was recognized by the UN thanks to the work developed aligned with Goal 15 – Life on Land – dedicated to protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, due to our work with communities in Brazilian biomes, providing training and capacity building for the supply of native ingredients, socio-environmental and economic promotion of the region, and valuing standing forests,” Sabará points out.
Through the partnership with Origens Brasil®, Beraca and Concepta Ingredients will provide a more detailed overview of the production chain. Initially, the focus is on copaíba marketed in Calha Norte, which, based on a database supplied by the Forest and Agricultural Management and Certification Institute (Imaflora®) and the raw material supplying communities, makes it possible to identify the community responsible for the input, its location, and even the number of people benefited and the percentage paid above the local price for the product.
“Companies seeking market recognition must invest in fair relationships with raw material supplying communities. Transparency and respect for the environment are essential and must come above all else. For this, it is extremely important to rely on the work of respected institutions capable of ensuring a trustworthy environment for all parties involved in the production chain,” evaluates Ulisses Sabará.

About Origens Brasil®
Origens Brasil® is an initiative developed by Imaflora and the Socio-Environmental Institute, launched in 2016, which advocates pathways for the sustainable development of the Amazon based on valuing the economic activities of traditional peoples—understood as low-impact—and their culture and way of life. It maps and connects companies with forest peoples, based on differentiated and long-term commercial relationships, ethical market relations, and recognition of intangible and immaterial values added to the product.
