On the Rise, Organic Food Benefits Health and Promotes Environmental Protection
Care for the body and healthy eating are movements that have been rapidly growing in recent years. The Organic Promotion Association (Organis) points out that there was a 44.5% increase in the consumption of these products during the first seven months of the Covid-19 pandemic. Another data point supporting this trend comes from the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras). According to the study, 36% of consumers began incorporating foods and beverages they consider beneficial for the immune system.
Change in Mindset
According to Lilia Kawazoe, Commercial Manager at Concepta Ingredients, a business unit of Grupo Sabará that offers the market a line of ingredients for the food industry focused on natural, organic, sustainable, and traceable products, there was a time when consumers did not give due importance to the planting and harvesting of the raw materials that generate the final products. However, today, consumers value risk control, good social and sustainable practices, and products that promote healthiness and well-being. “Society is more aware, seeks information, and is concerned with issues regarding origin, credibility, quality seals, and guarantees of provenance,” she comments.
Focus on the Environment
Concern for the environment is another factor that helps explain the increase in organic consumption in recent years. This is because, in addition to benefiting health, organic production promotes environmental protection, as it is produced in a way that benefits the local ecosystem, without the use of genetically modified organisms or synthetic chemicals, while preserving the rights of the workers involved, protecting natural resources, and respecting the socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of local communities.
“Today’s consumers care about the environment and look for products and companies that contribute to a better world, with actions such as reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) and carbon emissions, the absence of animal testing or mistreatment, the use of recycling practices, as well as direct work with small rural communities or in remote areas of Brazilian biodiversity.”
