Amazon Day: Green Economy Model Generates Positive Impacts and Supports the Preservation of the World’s Largest Tropical Rainforest

Thaís Hiramoto

On September 5th, Amazon Day is celebrated, a date created to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the world’s largest tropical rainforest, whose biodiversity is tied to the balance of the planet’s environmental stability. According to WWF Brazil, the Amazon Rainforest is the only one in the world that still maintains its extent and biological diversity — making it one of the largest genetic reserves on Earth.

The usual land-use model in this biome, however, raises doubts about the sustainability of this entire biodiversity. According to INPE, since the beginning of the year, there has been an 84% increase in fire outbreaks compared to the same period in 2018. In this context, it is increasingly urgent to review how we use our natural resources and reduce environmental damage caused by deforestation and expanding exploitation that threaten the forest and its ecosystems, causing imbalances and environmental crises worldwide.

Aware of this, Concepta Ingredients, a unit belonging to the Sabará Group specialized in developing natural and technological solutions focused on the food, beverage, animal nutrition, and veterinary pharmaceutical industries, continues to reaffirm its role and position as a company committed to sustainability and environmental conservation.

The entire production chain of Concepta Ingredients’ line of organic and exotic oils is aligned with the values advocated by the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. The company creates innovative products from sociobiodiversity ingredients, seeking local socioeconomic development and environmental conservation. The line’s items are developed in partnership with local communities, respecting harvest and seasonality, and directly measuring socio-environmental impacts.

The company operates according to the circular economy concept, a model that supports the idea that everything originating from nature should, at the end of its useful life, return to it, causing the least environmental impact and increasing overall production efficiency. The conservation of the areas where the fruits are collected even contributes to the reduction of deforestation, since it is possible to generate wealth and social inclusion through non-timber forest assets. Another positive outcome of conserving these regions relates to the tons of carbon emissions avoided in the atmosphere, which contribute to global warming mitigation.

The green economy model needs to be encouraged across all economic sectors to generate positive impacts on ecosystems and the communities living there. Industries play a fundamental role in generating these impacts through their production and consumption models, thereby enhancing the economy of standing forests.

Specifically, food industries need to promote organic and sustainable supply chains, fully incorporate biodiversity ingredients, encourage entrepreneurship among rural communities, and foster systems that use products from standing forests or even promote reforestation. In this way, it is possible to generate wealth in multiple ways and connect global needs with consumer demand without causing deforestation and destruction of such a vital resource for the world.
