Study Highlights the Positive Environmental Impacts Promoted by Concepta Ingredients on Ecosystem Services

STUDY HIGHLIGHTS THE POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS PROMOTED BY CONCEPTA INGREDIENTS ON ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

Analysis points out the benefits of socio-environmental projects aimed at reducing deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions in Mato Grosso and Rondônia

São Paulo, July 2018 – To measure the climate benefits promoted by the actions of Concepta Ingredients, a business unit belonging to the Sabará Group specialized in developing natural and technological solutions for the food, beverage, animal nutrition, and veterinary pharmaceutical industries, an analysis was conducted by the business initiative Trend in Ecosystem Services (TeSE), from the Center for Sustainability Studies at the São Paulo Business School of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGVces/EAESP-FGV).

The evaluation monitored the production process of Brazil nut oil in Juruena, Mato Grosso, and cupuaçu butter in Porto Velho, Rondônia, aiming to highlight the benefits of sourcing raw materials from non-timber forest production over the next five years. As a result, it was identified that, thanks to the sustainable agro-extraction promoted by Concepta Ingredients in these two municipalities, a positive externality of R$ 10 million will be generated by avoiding deforestation in the monitored areas.

“Our goal is to promote initiatives that, besides providing the market with more natural and healthier solutions, can stimulate socio-environmental development, conserving biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable use of raw materials. We work strongly to demonstrate that maintaining standing forests is the best way to guarantee a steady source of income for local populations,” emphasizes Thaís Hiramoto, sustainability specialist at Concepta Ingredients.

Another point highlighted by the research is the importance of environmental actions in these two regions. In this regard, it was identified that 3% of the area where Concepta Ingredients’ projects are implemented would be deforested within five years. Furthermore, cattle ranching was indicated as the most likely activity in the absence of initiatives of this scale, which would represent emissions of approximately 85,000 tons of CO2.

“The results of the analysis show us that we are on the right path; all our actions are based on people’s well-being, biodiversity preservation and maintenance, dignified employment, innovation, responsible production, and combating climate change. In the coming years, we expect to expand our operations and ensure even more positive results in different regions of the country,” states Thaís Hiramoto.
