Concepta Ingredients expands its biodiversity product line with the launch of Patauá Oil
The new product directly contributes to local socioeconomic development, currently encompassing 36 families, one community, and 23 hectares of conserved and organically certified land.
March, 2021 – Concepta Ingredients, one of the business units of Grupo Sabará, offers a line of more than 100 ingredients for the food, beverage, animal nutrition, veterinary pharmaceutical, flavor, chemical, and nutraceutical industries.
Aiming to expand its product range and thereby increase its role in promoting local socioeconomic development, environmental protection, and fair trade, the company introduces its new product in the Arboreto Premium Ingredients line—exclusively dedicated to ingredients from Brazilian biodiversity—the Patauá Oil, developed to meet the needs of various market segments.
Known as the “Amazon Olive Oil,” Patauá Oil is rich in omega-9 and phytosterols, with a natural presence of various vitamins. The oil is cold-pressed, imparting flavor and health benefits to the final product.
Originating from the Amazon biome, the oenocarpus bataua, commonly known as patauá, is a palm tree found throughout the region, whose leaves, fruits, stalk, and roots are all utilized. Its fruits are oblong, averaging 2 cm in diameter and weighing between 10 and 15 grams. Each palm produces between 3 and 4 clusters, and the fruits contain approximately 40% pulp. The oil extracted from the Patauá pulp has a fatty acid profile and flavor similar to olive oil, hence the nickname “Amazon Olive Oil.”
Also known by the names Patoá, Batauá, or Putauá, it contains one of the most valuable plant proteins, comparable to beef or milk due to its high levels of tryptophan and lysine.
It has various applications in foods due to its high unsaturation, such as in baked goods, grilled dishes, fish, vegetables, and sweets.
Commitment to biodiversity
Concepta’s primary focus today is prioritizing the use of national raw materials, which have accounted for more than 90% of total inputs purchased over the past three years. This is one of the ways the company values biodiversity and drives the Brazilian value chain.
The Organic and Exotic Oils Line is developed based on a commitment to socio-environmental responsibility; therefore, its products result from multiple projects that have forest preservation as their foundation and directly contribute to community development.
The remaining population from the large migratory wave of Northeastern Brazilians who, at the end of the 19th century, moved to the region attracted by the rubber boom, now resides in the Marajó Archipelago and predominantly earns a living from logging, heart of palm extraction, and açaí cultivation. “However, there are families living further away, in river channels and streams, who cannot monetize the buying and selling of natural products. This vulnerability often leads to labor exploitation,” explains Lilia Kawazoe, Commercial Manager at Concepta Ingredients.
However, through Patauá Oil, Concepta has found a meaningful way to assist these communities by developing a fairer supply chain and preventing potential deforestation in the area.
Currently, there is an association facilitating access for riverside dwellers to improve management, with 36 registered collectors. Additionally, Patauá Oil serves as a product diversification, enabling income generation during complementary periods while respecting different harvest seasons. Therefore, regarding the production of Patauá Oil, 36 families, one community, and 23 hectares of conserved and organically certified land are positively impacted.
