Functional Ingredients Enable Healthy Nutrition for Pets as Well

There is no doubt that most Brazilians are passionate about pets, especially the more traditional ones like dogs and cats. The Brazilian Association of the Pet Products Industry (ABINPET) quantifies this affection: our country ranks fourth in total pet population and holds the third position in pet sector revenue. However, when it comes to nutrition, do people really know what is best for their animals?
Contrary to the notion that only humans need a healthy diet, it is essential to understand that this is also a very important issue for pets. Ideal foods are those containing functional ingredients, that is, additives which, when included in the formulation and consumed daily, produce effects aimed at increasing longevity, quality of life, and the health of animals. Other benefits include reducing stool odor, balancing the intestinal microbiome, enhancing nutrient absorption, and stimulating the natural defenses present throughout the gastrointestinal tract.
Moreover, functional foods also help reduce the presence of free radicals resulting from oxidation and provide compounds that perform similar roles in the body. Additional effects that the combination of certain ingredients can offer include protecting joints, skin, and promoting healthier coats.
There are also compounds that support weight management and promote heart health, substances that aid in stimulating the immune system, and reduce effects related to senility when applied in specific formulations.
It is worth noting that some functional ingredients still require scientific backing to allow their widespread use on packaging. Beyond this challenge, there is also a need to educate pet owners to identify these items on labels and understand the benefits they provide.
Considering this information, it is clear that the pet food industry is growing and showing significant advancements but still needs to continuously invest in innovation to add value for Brazilian consumers. The positive outcomes of this progress will continue to be reflected in the longevity and health of our pets.
